Yakitori Binchotan Opens Branch in Lightsite Parc Cebu

First off, Yakitori means "a Japanese dish of chicken pieces grilled on a skewer." [Wikipedia] Fortunately, A Restaurant has welcomed everybody to a Yakitori Haven here in Cebu. Yakitori Binchotan has opened its first restaurant located along Lightsite Parc AS Fortuna Street in Mandaue City

"We want to transport our guests to Sapporo and bring them as close as possible to the true Yakitori experience," said Francis Villaluz, Sr. Marketing Manager of Gerry's Group of Restaurants.

Gerry's Group has partnered with the original owners of Yakitori Binchotan - Chefs Yoshi Ishise, Tomio Hakada and Nori Suzuki for Yakitori Binchotan.

Chicken Teriyaki Salad

Tiger Roll

Chicken Shio and Tare

They are also responsible behind the success of noodle haven Ramen Sora, which is located beside Yakitori and Gerry's.

Yakitori Binchotan's recipes were passed on to Chef Nori by his grandfather who used to prepare them for his family during special occasions.

Chef Nori opened Yakitori Binchotan in Hokkaido, where he grew up, serving dishes using his grandfather's secret sauce, and grilled using Binchotan, a special kind of charcoal found only in Japan that brings out the taste of the skewered delight, usually Chicken.

Shiitake Mushroom with Ground Pork

Teba

"Binchotan packs so much heat and does not emit smoke, which allows the full flavor of the food to come out. The high heat from Binchotan helps to properly sear the meat keeping it juicy on the inside," says Villaluz.

Yakitori isn't as simple as putting meat or vegetable on a stick and grilling them. "There is so much discipline required in preparing this dish. The smell, the aroma of skewered dishes, and ultimately the taste makes all the difference," adds Chef Nori.

With its maiden branch Yakitori Binchotan is set to bring life to diners' tables with original dishes enjoyed in Hokkaido, the heart of Japan's culinary center.

COFFEE

STARBUCKS WILLOW BLEND™
The bright, crisp flavor and subtle complexity shine through beautifully to create a breezy, delicious and easy-to-drink cup.

STARBUCKS® KATI KATI BLEND
Kati Kati* blend displays a great example of the art of blending and roasting in action. The beans from East Africa produce extraordinary coffees that are great over ice – Kenya brings body and distinctive citrus forward flavors, whilst Ethiopia coffee softens the blend and adds more complexity in flavor and aroma. The roast is dark enough to bring the acidity, body and flavor into an invigorating balance between citrus and spice notes from Kenya and the subtle floral aromas and crisp acidity from Ethiopia. *Kati-Kati – Swahili for “between”

STARBUCKS RESERVE® KENYA KARATINA AA*
This wonderful coffee takes its name from both the town and the wet mill that processed the coffee for Starbucks. It is comprised of coffees representing the Barichu Farmers Cooperative. The farms are located in Nyeri, a region known for its high quality coffee and where the cherries mature slowly, which translates in the cup to produce complex flavors. Traditional fully washed coffees are sun-dried for 2-3 weeks to allow the flavors to intensify producing a bright citrusy acidity with savory umami notes that are complex and lingering. The flavors of the coffee can be enjoyed whether hot or iced.

*AA is a classification of coffee grown in Kenya. All Kenyan coffee is graded after it is milled. Grades are assigned based on the screen size of the bean, not the quality.

Available only in Starbucks Reserve® stores:
 Starbucks Tomas Morato, Quezon City
 Starbucks 8 Forbes Town, Bonifacio Global City
 Starbucks Keyland Centre, Makati City
 Starbucks Central Square, Bonifacio Global City
 Starbucks Signa Residences, Makati City
 Starbucks Sapphire Bloc, Pasig City

Monkey's Belly Bistro Bar Opens Outlet Outside Singapore, Introduces in Cebu

Specializing on Filipino Dishes with a Singaporean Twist, Monkey's Belly Bistro Bar opened its door to Cebuanos last June 19, 2015. This Bistro Bar is located at the ground floor of Capitol Square Building, Escario, Cebu City. When asked why Monkey's Belly? Samuel Chaw, the Owner/Manager and Chef, confirmed that it's combination of his favorite Cebu's Lechon Belly and the mother company in Singapore, Monkey's Forehead Pte Ltd. Thus, the name Monkey's Belly Bistro Bar came up.

Now, check these featured Dishes and Drinks that we actually recommend to our online friends to try when you visit the Bar.

Peanut Butter Burger
It is definitely the one and only peanut butter burger available in Cebu. " Peanut butter is a personal favourite of mine and I believed that it can be eaten with Anything. I started working with the Patty, adjusting the favour profile of it to make sure that it suits the local taste bud. It took me a week to perfect the peanut butter sauce and this is definitely worth a try."

Golden Aburi Brocolli
This is FaceCebu.Net's Favorite. It makes use of the traditional Japanese method of Salmon Aburi, which involves torching of the Salmon. It gives the Brocolli a light smokinesss, which adds flavours to a simple Bricolli. For the sauce, Monkey's Belly Bistro Bar did its own balsamic dressing, with a touch of Red Sugar.

Spring Wings
Known as "Har Cheong Gai" in Singapore, it is deep fried with prawn paste and a secret recipe, which they did not share.

S'Mores Cocktail
S'mores is actually a contraction of a phase 'Some More'. It is a traditional nighttime campfire treat popular in the US and recently the Canada, consisting of a roasted marshmallow and a layer of chocolate sandwiched between two Graham cracker. S'mores Cocktail consists of waffle, marshmallow, chocolate ice cream/syrup and Graham Cracker.

Monkey's Special
This is Monkey's Belly Bistro Bar's Signature Drink - Chocolate and French Banana Puree blended into perfection. Served with Chocolated sticks, fried banana chips and more chocolate syrup

Monkey's Belly Bistro Bar is open from 5:00 PM - 2:00 AM, everyday from Monday to Sunday. You can also like their Facebook Page and send message for inquiries.

"Hi guys, I'm Mark Monta and this afternoon, I will be talking about Basics, Basics on Blogging and Social Media" I started that Speaking engagement with more or less Twenty-three Timex Employees. Talking in front of people is not a new thing to me but last Thursday was different. I felt like I drank a galloon of coffee as I felt a sea of anxiety deep inside. Well, maybe it's because I know them and they know me. Third Quarter of last year, I was invited to talk in the First Southern Leyte Tourism Seminar. There were local Personalities and Senator Bongbong Marcos attended that event but it was easy and I mean I did very well. But last Thursday was different. I'm not sure why.

My Topic during the Talk

Participants of Knowledge Cafe Brew Of The Month : BLOG

Anyways, Thanks to Timex Philippines Toastmasters for preparing everything. It's not a big Seminar but sharing my knowledge and experiences to my Officemates is a big accomplishment to me. I divided the session into two topics, Blog and Social Media. Even though the event was entitled as "Knowledge Cafe Brew of the Month : Blog ", I took the initiative to at least introduce some basics of Social Media and its good benefits to Start-ups or Businesses. Timex participants are very active and the interaction was indeed fruitful. I learned something from their inquiries and most importantly, they gained details and information from my short talk.

And oh, before I forgot, I also featured some of my Timex Friends' Blogs. Check them out below....

Oshinrose Reyes Fernandez, a fruit vendor, said she was threatened with a gun by Minglanilla Market Supervisor, Ramsay Sayson during a street argument in Minglanilla, Cebu. In her video posted yesterday (September 29), it looks like Mr. Sayson was trying to ask Fernandez to pull out her stuff out of the street. Instead of calmly requesting it to her, Mr. Sayson allegedly threatened her with gun and argued with Fernandez in a very loud manner.

"Now it's official!" is Back, A Never Dying Facebook Hoax!

$

My dear Family, Relatives, Friends and Earthlings - this is a Hoax! It's been in Social Media again, Facebook, since the Year 2009 with other version from  Internet rumor site Snopes.com, then it came back in 2012 and again, January of this Year. And lately, it is rounding the Site again and again, Facebook denied this rumor in their mini-post last Monday which is also in relation to NASA's Mars Announcement.

Facebook posted "While there may be water on Mars, don't believe everything you read on the internet today. Facebook is free and it always will be. And the thing about copying and pasting a legal notice is just a hoax. Stay safe out there Earthlings!"

Choose A Safe Canyoneering In Badian Cebu

$

Lately, Canyoning or locally known as Canyoneering became a Tourist attraction in the beautiful towns of Alegria and Badian. In line with it's fame as an extreme "Water Activity", Local Operators or Guides took this opportunity without even considering the harm and safety of their Guests or Tourists. Last weekend, Twelve Cebu Bloggers Society Members were invited by iCanyoneering Cebu in partnership with Kawasan Nature park Multi-purpose Cooperative to experience and travel the beautiful Canyons of Alegria and Badian.

Twelve Cebu Bloggers Society Members during their mini-break

So, why and how to choose a safe Canyoneering? Let’s first discuss the “why?”. In Badian, there's no specific rule from the Local Government Unit that guides the operators, guests, or tourists in relation to this activity, Canyoneering. Even the standardization or regularization of Fees are not being well observed by the Operators. While others give the package as PHP 800-900, some asks for PHP 1,300-1,500. Not to mention, other Guides would take a number of Guests (10-15) without even asking for a signed waiver. According to iCanyoneering Cebu, a standard ratio of Guide to Guests is 1:5, thus if you are in a group of 10, there should be at least Two Guides that will accompany you in the activity. In addition, before the event, the Guests should be oriented with the activity’s safety precautions, what and what-not to Dos. During the event, one must always follow what your Operator or Guides request you to do. Do not complain, always follow, remember that they know the area or canyons better than you do.

Now, how to choose a safe Canyoneering? Well, I tell you, this is not a bias recommendation, as the FaceCebu Author, Mark Monta have already experienced Canyoneering twice and his first was good but we commend to contact below Operators for a better and Safe Canyoneering Experience.

Why Do We Offer Foods At The Altar During Kalag-Kalag?

Kalag-Kalag comes from the word "Kalag" that means Ghost. It is famously known and observed in Central Visayas, specifically in Cebu. In other part of the Country, this tradition is followed during All Souls' Day (November 2, after All Saints' Day - November 1) which Filipinos visit their departed loved ones in Cemetery. Even the Catholic Church always suggests to say prayer during these Solemn Days, we always tend to follow our Ancestors' traditions like offering Flowers and lighting of Candles outside our House or near the Doorstep and lighting at the Cemetery's Big Cross. In addition to this custom, Cebuanos prepare and offer Foods in the Altar and in Tombs. But why do we prepare foods and celebrate a little feast during Kalag-Kalag?

I've done research online and even came to the point on asking Lapu-Lapu City Tourism Consultant, Ka Bino Guerrero regarding this random question.

According to TheHolidaySpot.com, "The customs and traditions associated with All Soul's Day are various and differs from culture to culture. It is the common belief that the dead partake of the food in spirit which the living eat later. Therefore an altar is prepared at home with an offering of food upon it. The offerings (ofrendas) are beautifully arranged with flowers such as marigolds which are the traditional flower of the dead."

One of our traditions during All Souls Day is to light a candle in Cemetery's Big Cross. Photo Credit: Philstar.com

According to Ka Bino, "Philippine Catholicism is quite unique. Many of our pagan practices were not eradicated by the Spaniards. Offering Food as well as the Sinulog are all but vestiges of our animistic religion during the pre-colonial period. I can't say it was allowed by the church, but there were no conscious effort in stopping it. Thus it continues until these days"

According to belief, as we put lighted candles on our departed loveones' tombs the brighter the lights they can see as guide going to heaven. Photo Credit: Sunstar Cebu

So, if you have your idea why we offer or prepare foods in the Altar during Kalag-Kalag, please submit using comment box below. :)

Last October 20, 2015, Conde Nast Traveler(CNTraveler.com) released a list forReaders' Choice Awards 2015 In relation to their 28th Annual Survey, this year is participated by 128,000 travelers who submitted millions of ratings and tens of thousands of comments which helped create a list of favorites from all over the World which includes Top 20 Best Islands in the World, Best Cities in the World and 100 Best Hotels & Resorts in the World.

Follow us at FACEBOOK , TWITTER  (@FaceCebu) and INSTAGRAM (@mmonta)

Luckily, Philippines has Three Entries in their Top 20 Best Islands in the World - Cebu in 19th, Boracay in 15th and Palawan in Number One Spot.

19. Cebu, Philippines | Overall Rating: 80.404

The most densely populated island in the Philippines, Cebu is famous for its beaches, on the mainland as well as around many of the surrounding islands. Not as wild as Phuket in Thailand, Cebu City is more personal, with plenty of up-and-coming restaurants and shopping.

A photo posted by Mark Monta (@mmonta) on
Pro tip: To get a true taste of island life, head off the grid on the Camotes Islands, two hours east of Cebu. Bring cash because there are no ATMs.

Getting there: Many Asian airlines have direct flights to Mactan Cebu International Airport from neighboring countries like Singapore. Note that the airport is located on a different island and it takes about 30 minutes by taxi to get to Cebu City.

15. Boracay, Philippines | Overall Rating: 80.856

This itty-bitty island (just under 4 square miles) in the Western Philippines is as close to the tropical idyll as you’ll find in Southeast Asia, with gentle coastlines and transporting sunsets. Add in a thriving nightlife scene, and you have one of the top tourist spots in the region.

A photo posted by Mark Monta (@mmonta) on
Pro tip: The aptly named White Beach is Boracay’s main draw, with powdery white sand and shallow azure water ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

Getting there: Fly from Manila to Caticlan in Malay; from there, pump boats ferry passengers to White Beach.

1. Palawan, Philippines | Overall Rating: 85.937

This small island—one of the Philippines’ 7,107—shot to the top of our list again this year with a recent claim to fame: It’s now home to one of the new seven natural wonders of the world, Puerto Princesa Subterranean River.

Pro tip: Palawan's natural wonder is one of the longest underground rivers in the world, traveling five miles through a subterranean cave system. Guided boat tours take visitors down a portion of the waterway, where karsts, natural rock formations created by dissolving limestone, loom in every direction.

Getting there: From Manila, it’s an hour-and-15-minute flight to Puerto Princesa, Palawan’s main airport. Alternately, ferries travel between Manila and the island several days a week (about 24 hours each way).

Here's the complete list of Conde Nast Traveler's Top 20 Best Islands in the world:

20. Hvar & Dalmatian Islands, Croatia
19. Cebu, Philippines
18. Sta. Lucia
17. Orkney Islands, Scotland

This week is all about Cebu! Last October 17, Sleepinginairports.net (SIA) released it's yearly lists of Best and Worst Airports in the World, Asia, Africa and other Continents. Started on July 11, 1996, SIA is founded by Donna McSherry who is now heading a team of researchers, writers and an illustrators. This yearly Ranking of World's Airports are based on overall airport experience as determined by voters in their 2015 Airport Survey (powered by polldaddy). Luckily, Mactan-Cebu International Airport landed in 18th Place in Asia and the Best in the Philippines. Two other Airports in the country made it to Top 30, Iloilo Airport in 21st rank and Clark International Airport, which took the 24th place. In contrast, Manila Ninoy Aquino International Airport ranked 8th in Worst Airports in Asia 2015.

Follow us at FACEBOOK , TWITTER  (@FaceCebu) and INSTAGRAM (@mmonta)

Currently, MCIA is being upgraded by GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation (GMCAC). Per Gov.ph report, here are the improvements:

  • Replacement of worn-out interiors such as counters, lighting, and ceiling boards
  • Reconfiguration of the check-in lobby and waiting areas to free up more space
  • Improved resort airport theme design, with abundant plant arrangement interiors
  • Provision of new seats and furniture for added comfort
  • Upgrading security procedures to lessen passenger queuing
  • Construction of a greeter’s area
  • Installation of new equipment, such as self-service check-in kiosks
